An Aesope's Fable- Why Mosquitos Buzz?

Today at school, the Lexington Children's Theatre performed another great play that was about the Aesop's fable- Why Mosquitos Buzz.  They did an amazing job, as usual!  We could not take pictures during the play, but a couple of my girls took my phone after the play and had their pictures made with the performers.  The costumes, props, and set designs are always so great!

Fractions of a Set

During the past few weeks, we have been working really hard with fractions.  This lesson focused on finding the fraction of a set.  For example, they would have to find 2/3 of 21.  We used counters today to model the problems.  So if you have 21 counters, students divided them into three equal groups and then counted how many there would be in two of those groups, which would be 14.

No Talking

We just finished reading "No Talking" which is such a funny book about a fifth grade class who just has trouble not talking all the time.  They decide to have a competition, boys against girls, to see who can actually go without talking for two whole days.  The ending is really shocking with a twist!

We tried this ourselves for two hours one afternoon at school and it was too funny!  Watching everyone communicate without words was very interesting and some had to be pretty creative to get their points across without saying a word!

It's Current- Electricity!

In science this week, we have been learning about electrical currents with closed and open circuits.  Students worked with partners today to experiement how to create a closed circuit.  We recorded our hypothesis in our science journals before we actually got to discover how to create the circuit.  After many trial and error tests, they figured it out and the light came on- literally!

Figurative Language Rap

Fifth grade classes introduced us to this song during our morning assembly a couple of weeks ago and we are using it to remember the different types of figurative language- it's very catchy and I'm glad they shared it!

Slavery Unit Book Talks

In our morning reading class, we have been reading picture books about slavery and the Underground Railroad. Students worked in pairs and read these stories, making connections, asking questions as they read, and writing down any words they were unfamiliar with. Then they completed their own books talks, summarizing the book and leaving you with a question to think about. This was a first for some students to be in front of the camera and they were a little nervous!  Enjoy and I hope you read their book suggestions!

Minute to Win It- Valentine's Day Fun

After we passed out Valentine's and ate our snack, we played a game during the last ten minutes of class.  We used oreos and students had to get the oreo in their mouth without touching it and it started out on their forehead!  It was so funny to watch them.  Here is our winner- Colton!
