Layers of Soil Experiment

We conducted an experiment this week to test different types of mixtures of soil, sand, and gravel to see how much water could pass through within a minute.  We did this experiment to lead into the discussion of why we must have  a mixture of substances for plants to grow properly.  We were shocked to find that the most water passed through the soil only test.  The best mixture included soil, sand, and gravel.

We poured in 80 mL of water and timed the drainage for 1 minute to see how much water would end up in the cup after that amount of time.  We then measured the amount to compare the different mixtures.
